Donegal Alternatives To Pylons
The next two gigs in the ‘Save our Scenery’ series hosted by Moya Brennan in Leo's Tavern, Crolly, will take place on June 29th and July 1st, 2010. Leo's Tavern is the pub belonging to Leo and Baba Brennan, the parents of the world famous singers and musicians Clannad and Eyna.
The June 29th concert features Brian Kennedy and Frances Black and the July 1st concert will feature Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill, Maighréad Ní Dhomhnaill, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh and Moya Brennan who are calling themselves ‘T with the Maggies’ for this unique benefit gig.
Donegal Alternatives to Pylons have been campaigning for over a decade to have an alternative to a high voltage power line being erected over ground across 100 of Donegal’s most scenic townlands, 97 of which are in the Donegal Gaeltacht.
‘Dubliners would baulk at the idea of putting wind turbines, taller than the Spike on O’Connell St, in the Phoenix Park. But the Donegal hills are our local amenity and our tourism economy depends on their unique appearance’, Deirdre Brennan, a spokesperson for the group argues.
The environmentalists are planning more protests in Donegal and in Dublin and the 'Save Our Scenery' Gigs will continue in the intimate setting of Leo’s Tavern.
Donegal Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty has issued a press release that erecting the 110KV power line and pylons across Donegal will be a decision that 'the county will come to regret'. Speaking in advance of the Alternative to Pylons benefit concert Senator Doherty has called on the ESB to rethink their proposals.
Senator Doherty said: 'The proposed army of Pylons across Donegal’s most scenic landscape is a decision that we as a county will come to regret. There are alternatives to overhead power lines and pylons which can deliver the energy needed while at the same time preserving our landscape, under-grounding is one such alternative. I am seriously frustrated that after nine years of campaigning to have other alternatives to overhead power lines accepted that the ESB are unwilling to listen to the local community.
'In the past number of weeks I have been tasked by the Oireachtas committee on Arts, Sport and Tourism to prepare a report on their behalf which will examine the potential of tourism and job creation. Since then it has become clearer to me that areas such as Donegal have major potential to attract tourists if marketed properly. Donegal’s rugged landscape, its mountain ranges, lakes and off shore islands are all easy sells, however the imminent proposals to erect pylons throughout this area will rob us of all those positives.
“It is not too late for the ESB to rethink their proposals. This plan should be scraped and replaced with one which the local community can support and one that does not leave a lasting scar on our landscape.'

A Shine of Rainbows
The Inishowen landscape features prmoinently in a new movie, 'A Shine of Rainbows', recently released in cinemas across Canada and USA. The film's Producer, Kim Roberts, said of the Inishowen area ‘Downtown Vancouver is a long way from Malin Head, in more ways than one, but it was the perfect place to shoot the film. And it was accessible: you could fly into Derry and be on the set in half an hour. Normally, getting to an area of unspoilt beauty takes a long time and lots of planning. Donegal was in a class of its own’,
Filmed entirely on location in Donegal the movie stars Aidan Quinn, Connie Nelson and John Bell. The film was directed by Vic Sarin who was awestruck by the beauty of the Inishowen Peninsula. For more information see A Shine of Rainbows.

Is ag cur daonlathas ar fionraí atá sa leasú ar Bille Um Údarás na Gaeltachta – Doherty
Tá sé ráite ag an Seanadóir Pearse Doherty nach mbeidh Sinn Féin ag tacú le leasú ar Bhille um Údarás na Gaeltachta. Leasú atá ann a chuirfeas síniú ama le treimhse Bhord an Údaráis ó 5 bliana go leith go dtí 7 mbliana go leith.
Ag tagairt don Bhille mar “fionraí daonlathais” dúirt an Seanadóir Doherty: 'Beidh Sinn Féin in éadán an Bhille seo a ghabháil fríd an Dáil agus an Seanad. Mar atá feicthe againn go dtí seo, trí dhiúltú an rialtais fothoghchán a ghairm i nDún na nGall Thiar Theas agus ann sa dá dháilcheantair eile, tá sé soiléir gur diúltú eile atá anseo cead labhartha a thabhairt do na daoine agus i ndáiríre is fionraí daonlathais atá ann.
'Tá Údarás na Gaeltachta tachta tirim. Tá ciorraithe ar mhaoiniú agus tá seo ag déanamh dochar ollmhór do fhostaíocht sa Ghaeltacht. Anois, leis an ghéarchéim eacnamaíochta atá againn, tá sé fíor-thábhachtach go dtoghfaí bord nua sa dóigh go dtiocfaí ar dhearcadh úrnua chun dul i ngleic leis na dúshláin atá ag ceantair Ghaeltachta.
'Níor cheart ligean don rialtas daonlathas a chuir ar fionraí mar is mian leo, sin an rud atá siad a dhéanamh leis na fothoghcháin. Beidh mise agus mo pháirtí ag cur in éadan an Bhille seo'.

Citizens Against Recycling Charges
Citizens Against Recycling Charges (CARC) have written to members of Donegal County Council and all the members of the Seanad arguing for the recinding of increased recycling charges in the County.
Carndonagh's Recycling Centre worked for a decade as an exemplary facility taking back most materials. People appreciated it and separated and returned their household waste. This centre was the only one in County Donegal which was free of charge for all recyclates. The official recycling ratio was 31% all over the county in 2008. Now since the introduction of higher recycling charges that figure has dropped to 10%.
CARC have opened a blog concerning the recycling situation in Donegal.See CARC Blog.

Gather at the Gweebarra!
Coiste Timpeallachta Ghaoth Bearra, the Gweebarra Conservation Group is holding 'Gather at the Gweebarra!' on the Gweebarra Bridge from 11.00am to 2.00pm on Saturday, July 10th, 2010 to highlight the threats to the local environment and way of life.
The Gweebarra River Valley and Estuary is a unique landscape which supports many protected species and habitats. These include wild deer and salmon, a 500 strong common seal population and several protected bird species like Golden Eagles, Northern Bullfinches, Grouse and Corncrakes. As such the Gweebarra is a Natura 2000 site and an EU Designated Area of Conservation which means it is supposed to be protected by law from developments which would have a negative environmental impact.
However the Gweebarra, its unique environment and its people, are now under threat from metal prospectors, high voltage power lines and industrial wind farms which carry health concerns for the local community and would impact negatively on their livelihoods and homes.
In November, 2009 the Directors of the Planning Board overruled their own Inspector and granted planning permission to the ESB and Eirgrid power companies to erect a high voltage power line across protected habitats in 100 of Donegal’s townlands, including across the Gweebarra River.
As soon as planning was granted for this power line 50 applications to build new wind farms in south and west Donegal were received by Donegal County Council.
The State plans to increase wind energy production in Donegal to 690MW+ in ten years, representing a land grab of over 3,000 hectares, which will mean that virtually every hill top in Donegal would be covered in wind turbines blighting the scenery while the attendant high voltage power lines would also denigrate the landscape and endanger our health.
Donegal already produces more wind energy than any other county in Ireland at 264MW and there is no regulation of how much should be produced in any given county. At present 9 counties have no wind turbines at all and these include the most populated counties where people do not want turbines blighting their views or disturbing their sleep.
How can excavating bog land and pouring 240 metres of concrete (40 lorry loads) for EACH wind turbine on the top of mountains and in Special Areas of Conservation be called 'green'? This practice, added to the pollution created in the making of the concrete, means that more C02 is released into the atmosphere when a turbine is erected on bog land than the turbines will ever offset. Wind speeds in Donegal are frequently too high for most turbines so that they have to be shut down often which defeats the purpose of putting them up in the first place.
Wind energy is a 'green' fallacy and we cannot allow the power and wind companies to destroy Donegal’s scenery and endanger our health solely for profit.
In March, 2010 Eamon Ryan, Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, granted a prospecting license in 50 townlands around the Gweebarra, including the River bed and the Bay, to Mytillus Minerals Ltd. If metals were found, cyanide or mercury would be used to extract the metals in open cast mines, polluting the river, local lakes and household wells.
Tourism is Donegal's No.1 employer and with unemployment at 30% in Donegal nothing should be allowed to threaten the County's growing tourism economy. This is an environmental injustice being forced onto our community which is illegal under International Law.
You are urged to attend the 'Gather at the Gweebarra!' and show your support for the 'Save Our Scenery!' Campaign. If you can help design or make banners or placards, put up posters or print leaflets please email the Gweebarra Conservation Group asap. You can also support the group on Facebook at Gweebarra Conservation Group.

Dhá Dhuais Raidió buaite ag Rónán Mac Aodha Bhuí
Bronnadh dhá Ghradam Chumarsáide ar an bhfear mór raidió, Rónán Mac Aodha Bhuí ag Gradaim Chumarsáide an Oireachtais a reáchtáladh i dTeach Farmleigh i mBaile Átha Cliath le déanaí. Ba é an dara bliain do Rónán an gradam do phearsa raidió na bliana a thabhairt abhaile leis agus bhí lúcháir ar fhoireann Raidió na Gaeltachta a bhíonn ag obair leis, nuair a bronnadh gradam do shraith raidió na bliana ar Rónán Beo @ 3. ‘Mixture maxture a bhíonn le cloisteáil ar an gclár’ a deir Rónán, ‘idir throm agus éadrom – ceol, siamsaíocht, agallaimh, cúrsaí sláinte, cócaireacht, scéalta nuachta, agus Mary Aggie, dár ndóigh’.
Ba é seo an dara bliain déag de na gradaim ina dtugtar aird ar éachtaí a baineadh amach sna meáin Ghaeilge le bliain anuas. Ar na daoine eile ar éirigh leo duais a bhaint amach ar an oíche bhí Eimear Ní Chonghaile, pearsa teilifíse na bliana; Darach Ó Dubháin, Aisteoir na Bliana; Brendan Delap, Iriseoir na Bliana agus Alan Titley, Colúnaí na Bliana.
Ba é Seó Spóirt a bhuaigh an duais do Shraith teilifíse na bliana agus bronnadh gradam chomh maith ar na Cloigne, dráma a fuair maoiniú faoin scéim mhaoinithe, Fuaim agus Fís. Bronnadh buaicghradam cumarsáide ar Fhoireann Iriseoireachta Foinse, a bhí fostaithe ag an nuachtán don tréimhse idir 1996 – 2009.

Facts & Figures
The latest statistics released by the Central Statistics office reveal that unemployment in Donegal is now at 30%.
Buncrana Mayor, Cllr Padraig Mac Lochlainn commented: 'There has been quite a lot said in the Dublin based media about high unemployment in "commuter belt" counties like Meath yet we can now see that the problems, while serious in counties like Meath, are a drop in the ocean compared to Donegal. Further analysis suggests that unemployment in Donegal is approaching 30%. That means that almost one in three of our workforce are unemployed!'
According to the Fine Gael party, 1,254 Donegal farmers applied for Income Support in 2009, the figure for 1st Quarter of 2010 already stands at 1,334, the third highest in the country. Fine Gael’s Deputy Agriculture Spokesperson Andrew Doyle says farmers are now filling out social welfare forms instead of EU forms, and that means taxpayers are losing out in every respect.
Public accountability on the monthly expenses claimed by Donegal's five sitting TDs and three Senators is now available to view on a month by month basis on the Internet. Topping the list of claimants was Donegal South-West Fine Gael TD, Deputy Dinny McGinley, who claimed a total of €10,467.68 over the two months. He was closely followed by Donegal North-East Fianna Fáil Deputy, Niall Blaney, with €10,215.68. Deputy Joe McHugh with €9,125.68, Deputy Dr James McDaid on €8,290.34 and Tánaiste Mary Coughlan claiming €2,000. Falcarragh based Fianna Fail Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill topped the list of the county's three sitting members of the Seanad on €7,851. Both Fianna Fáil Senator Cecilia Keaveney and Sinn Fein's Senator Pearse Doherty both claimed €3,320.33 per month, totalling €6,640.66.
The expenses also detail whether the claims are 'vouched' or 'unvouched' expenses, with TDs who produce receipts being allowed to claim up to €25,700, but TDs who do not produce the paperwork can claim a lower sum of €15,000 without having to produce any receipts!
The move follows the introduction of a new system since the start of March, which links Dáil attendance records to the amount of expenses a member of the Dáil can claim. Claims on the vouched system mean a Deputy must attend a minimum of 120 days in the Dáil or Seanad before full expenses claims will be awarded. See the claims at Oireachtas.

Artist in the Community Scheme
Congratulations to the Donegal Chamber Orchestra who has been successfully awarded the Arts Council’s 'Artist in the Community Scheme' managed by Create and the Arts Council. The aim of this scheme is to offer ensembles the opportunity to work closely with a professional artist on a regular basis. This award offers the musicians of the Donegal Chamber Orchestra the unique opportunity of working with the renowned Irish composer Ian Wilson. During the project Ian will engage with the musicians of the Donegal Chamber Orchestra during their weekly rehearsals and his knowledge of the players shall then inspire the creation of a new piece for string orchestra which will be premiered on Sunday the 10th of October at An Grianan Theatre. This world premiere will form part of a wonderful concert with the Spanish String Orchestra Concerto Málaga conducted by Italian Massimo Paris, in which the Donegal Chamber Orchestra will guest.
This exciting new work will be premiered by the Donegal Chamber Orchestra in concert with 'Concerto Málaga' at An Grianan Theatre on the 10th October, 2010.
The Donegal Chamber Orchestra is part of a wider Music Education Partnership in the county led by Co. Donegal VEC.

He cited Article 2 of the Irish constitution - 'the Irish nation cherishes its special affinity with people of Irish ancestry living abroad who share its cultural identity and heritage'.

A recent decision of An Bord Pleanála found that Shell's plans posed 'an unacceptable risk' to health and safety so Shell have to try a different route, and plan to drill up to 80 boreholes in a Special Area of Conservation of Sruwaddacon Estuary – but they'll be met with resistance.
The foreshore licence for bore holes in Sruth Fhada Chonn estuary has been granted by the Minister for Environment, John Gormley. This means that Shell have permission to make 80 bore holes in the estuary which will take about 2 1/2 days each and will start work on the 21st of June. If people are able to go to the camp that week it would be great, however the work will take months so resistance can happen anytime over the summer. On a positive note it looks like Shell will be leaving the offshore work of protecting the pipelne until next year. This could be because of their uncertainty of the route up the estuary, which is encouraging.
Local landowners have received applications for compulsory aquistion orders in relation to the new pipeline route.
The Shell to Sea objectors have until the 28th of July to object.
An Bord Pleanala will ask for submissions about Shell's application for permission to build the pipeline in the coming weeks.
