The County Librarian is Eileen Burgess. The Donegal County Library is administered
from Rosemount, Letterkenny.
The Central Library at Letterkenny has a lending stock of more than 20,000 items for adults and children - including books, tapes and videos. There are a large number of study and reading places as well as a children's area for storytelling and creative activities. The public may borrow much of the material or else view it in the library. The Central Library is home to the single most important resource for the study of the history, archaeology, natural history, literature and culture of Donegal. The Central Library has an extensive collection of encyclopaediae, dictionaries, atlases, maps, and other reference material, as well as having access to the holdings of other libraries, through on-line computer links, and inter-library loans. The Central Library is a centre for independent, self directed learning; users are able to make use of the stock and study facilities in pursuing courses, and they can also study independently of established courses and use the library's PCs to enhance their IT skills. The Central Library is the focus of the County Library and County Council's information network, an 'information utility' developed for the benefit of the people of Donegal. The Council has begun the implementation of the genesis automated library system, initially in the Central Library and the County Library Administrative Centre.
