John Boyce (1810-1864)

John Boyce was born in Donegal and educated at seminaries in Navan and Maynooth where he was ordained into the Catholic Church in 1837. He emigrated to America in 1845 and preached in Maine and Worchester, writing under the pseudonym 'Paul Peppergrass'. Boyce published 3 novels: Shanty Maguire, or Tricks upon Travellers (New York, 1848); The Spaewife, or the Queen's Secret (Baltimore, 1853) and Mary Lee or the Yankee in Ireland (1859).
Boyce also contributed to the influential 'Boston Pilot' newspaper and lectured extensively until his death in Worcester, Massachusetts on January 2nd, 1864.©
